Sonja Brooks
My name is Sonja Brooks. I teach First Grade with the Fenton Area Public Schools at State Road Elementary. I am a Fenton High School graduate, proud to be working in a district that made such an educational impact on my own schooling.
After high school, I went on to get my undergrad in Elementary Education with minors in Math, Science, Integrated Creative Arts, and Early Childhood at Western Michigan University. I earned my Master of Arts in Educational Technology from Michigan State University and have taken masters level courses in The Art of Teaching from Marygrove College.
I began my professional teaching career in 2005 with the Huron Valley School District teaching Kindergarten. I went on to teach Second Grade and First Grade on the traditional calendar as well as First Grade on the year round calendar. In 2012 my career too me back to my alma mater, Fenton, to teach first grade. I am passionate about teaching.
I believe students need to begin making their own structured choices in their education early on. I offer these opportunities to my students through methods such as alternative seating, Daily 5 Literacy and Daily 3 Math frameworks. I also utilize various technologies in the classroom to guide students into creating, problem solving, and ownership of their learning.
